Kora Course

The kora is a beautifully sounding and versatile string instrument from West Africa, originating from the regions of present-day Gambia, Senegal (Casamance), and Guinea-Bissau. Playing the kora is a widespread profession in West Africa and an increasingly popular hobby in Western countries. This is the fourth time the kora course is being offered at Sommelo.

Teaching takes place in small groups using traditional methods without written music. There are no skill-level requirements — beginners with no previous experience are welcome, but those who have played for many years will also find suitable challenges. The most important goal is to learn to play beautiful music together! This year, in line with Sommelon’s theme, the focus is on the element of water — these traditional pieces tell legends about, among others, the crocodile and the hippopotamus.

About the teachers

Josh Doughty (United Kingdom) has played the kora since the age of eight and was a student of the world-renowned Toumani Diabaté (Mali). Josh is a virtuosic kora artist who collaborates with various musicians, performs widely, and teaches kora around the world. For several years, he has regularly held kora courses at the Basel Academy of Music.

The second teacher is Gergely Várkonyi, who has been living in Kuhmo and has played the kora as a hobby for 15 years. His teachers have included numerous Western and African kora masters. Gergely has taught kora for many years at music festivals, courses, and in private lessons.
