Kantele and Wind Instrument Course

At the Kantele and Wind Instrument course the participants explore the rich sound worlds of the two instrument groups by playing together and creating music in the moment. All participants will get to play both kanteles and wind instruments through a shared repertoire consisting mainly of traditional Finnish and Karelian tunes.

Kanteles and wind instruments make an interesting combination in terms of both timbres and repertoire – lullabies, runo songs and shepherd songs among others create an inspiring soil for one’s own creations during the course. Some of the lessons are held in separate instrument groups, and some are used for joint work between both groups. If you prefer, you can focus solely on playing either kanteles or wind instruments during the course. All kinds of players are welcome, regardless of their playing background.

You can join the course with any type of kantele, and the course repertoire is particularly well suited for smaller kanteles (5–15 strings). You can bring your own instrument to the wind instrument lessons (e.g. recorder, transverse flute, other flutes or clarinet), and the course also introduces participants to playing the willow flute. If you have your own D willow flute, please bring it with you. It is also possible to borrow instruments for the duration of the course. If you need to borrow an instrument, please contact the course teachers (haryynan@gmail.com/kirsikka.ojala@gmail.com) before registering.

Welcome to the soothing, wild and beautiful world of kanteles and flutes!
