In the open singing workshop, you’ll learn why the Kalevala received the European Heritage Label. The nature descriptions and European essence of the epic invite you to sing and engage in discussion. You can join the song under the guidance of Sommelon’s directors Ilona Korhonen and Maari Kallberg.
The singing workshop is conducted in collaboration with the Kalevala Women’s Association. It is related to the European Heritage Label awarded to the Kalevala in 2024.
Ilona Korhonen is a musician, runo singer, and Doctor of Music, who has dedicated her entire adult life to studying and performing runo singing. At Sommelo, Ilona’s singing can be heard at the opening ceremony, at the kora and runo singing club, and in the Kalevala’s Call workshop.
Maari Kallberg is an academic professional in folk music. She works in the field of folk music as a performing artist, researcher, educator, and organizes various events, festivals, and seminars.
