Have you always wanted to get to know the world’s largest, heaviest, and loudest percussion instrument, the church bells?
Welcome to the “Exploring Church Bells in Depth” course, where you’ll have the opportunity to learn about the profession of church bell ringing as it used to be in the past. The course focuses especially on Orthodox bell ringing, but you’ll also get to learn about the anatomy and history of bells. The course is best suited for those with previous experience in music, but it’s not mandatory. During the crash course, everyone will learn their own bell peal, and at the end, we’ll have a concert where anyone interested can play.
The instructor is Supavit Nummelin, who describes himself as follows: “I was adopted from Thailand at the age of one, and I’m one of the few people in Finland who maintain, repair, and cast church bells as a full-time job. My responsibilities also include entire tower structures and their structural solutions. I also build organs and narrow-gauge railways. In Lapinjärvi, I run a church bell school where you can explore the secrets of church bells at the Finnish Bell Museum.”
The course can accommodate a maximum of 16 participants. The instructor will provide playing stools for those attending the course.
